The Waffle House might seem like an odd name for a kitchen renovation.
Can something as simple as a waffle really inspire a complete renovation?
Not the shape of a waffle, but the experience of eating one?
The answer is yes.
This was a fun project, you could probably assume from the name, because the clients are known for throwing waffle parties - yes, it’s a thing. And so when they purchased this house, they knew they needed to renovate the kitchen because it didn’t work for a waffle party.
Originally, the kitchen was small, closed off, and very dated. There was actually an old tv built into the upper cabinetry! And when the owners moved in, they knew the floor plan needed to be redesigned to best fit their needs.
When you first entered the house, it was difficult to know which direction to walk in. The kitchen and living room were hidden through a small wall opening, and disconnected from the dining room. Even though the house was fairly large, the size of the kitchen just did not fit the scale of the residence. The clients knew they needed a larger kitchen, but didn’t know where the extra space would come from, thinking a huge addition would be required to meet their needs.
After looking at the space and considering their needs, it became clear that they didn’t need a large addition. In fact, it only took an addition of 96 sf, and a more efficient floor plan, to give them all the space they needed. This led to the redesign of their angled hallway and pantry, which were incredibly inefficient. The large faux columns and dividing wall were also removed to connect the kitchen with the dining room. As a result, the entertaining spaces became more open, while the private spaces became better defined.
Since waffle parties were the ultimate inspiration, there were a few important aspects that needed to be programmed within the kitchen. First, the clients wanted a large island in order to have ample counter space. Based on the layout, we were able to get an island that was almost fifteen feet to fit. Appliance placement was very important as well, since they didn’t want an open door to restrict movement throughout the space.
The kitchen is a very important aspect of the home, especially for these clients. They love to cook and entertain, which is why they wanted to use Monogram appliances for the renovation. They also wanted to invest in their tile, stone, and cabinetry because they know the importance of quality materials. Function was just as important as form within this kitchen design. In order to provide the appropriate environment for a successful waffle party, we put a huge emphasis on prep space and outlet placement.
Some renovations are inspired by trends, some are inspired by functionality, but here we were inspired by the humble waffle. After a year of waiting, all of this work is able to be commemorated with a much needed, long awaited, waffle party.
